About commitment to goals

How to combine a 9 to 5 job with all of your private projects?

What are these private projects? Washing machine, walking with my dog, cooking? What do you mean?

Did you already think about your goals?

Goals? Becoming THE fastest clothes hanger or THE best dog walker in town?

This is what I do want to say. Our heads are full of responsibilities and duties.

Is there even space where we can switch off our To-Do's and think about what we truly want from life?

The first time this happened to me when I was in my first yoga class in a tropical country. It was so hot that my thoughts melted away and left my brain empty.

It's hard to enter this empty space of clear thinking.

It could be enforced when we are thrown into a different circumstance. Let's take the current pandemic. Many people built their own company during this time. A different circumstance can offer new opportunities.

Sometimes you have to try things first to find what you really enjoy doing. Not only the result (e.g. marathon) but also the process (e.g. running) itself.

Sometimes we see other peoples goals and ambitions, where we think we'd love to do that too. But once we try it, we discover that it's just not our thing. And that's okay. But if you never try, you never know.

Once the goal is found, there you are. You stick to it hard in the beginning. To prove it to yourself. And then what could happen, after a while, you just don't want to keep it up.

Ask yourself why did I really start this? Am I doing this for myself or to I want to get appreciation from other people? It's not a shame to let go of this goal if on the way you lose your direction.

For 3 years I was running constantly. Today I don't remember if it was really out of fun or because just everybody around me was doing it. I was spending at least 8-9 hrs on this hobby a week. I was really ambitions about the set goal and forced myself to follow the process of training for a marathon and achieve a result below a specific time.

When I look back now, I do not regret it. But right now, I don't want to have this lifestyle again. There is just so much more to try out, why stick to one direction only?

Especially considering sports there is so much to try out!

One question which can support you to find your goal:

When was the last time you entered the state of being in the flow?

To summarize:

  • You can find goals by trying different things.
  • Letting go or leaning in into the goal while trying, both works.
  • Stick to a goal for a period of time and then approach a new one, works too.

Hope I could give you some inspiration and that a commitment is needed but shouldn't be driven by the person you want other people to see in you.
